LeCAKE in Athens

From the 3rd to the 7th of June, the LeCAKE partners finally gathered in sunny Athens, Greece for a week-long workshop, hosted by the UrbanDig project / Ohi Pezoume. Now we are back home and eager to share what we experienced, learned and witnessed during our five-week adventure.

The highlight of being in Athens was the opportunity for all the LeCake partners to reunite, come together and have in-depth discussions about the project, its outcomes and the next steps. We are already preparing for the conclusion of the project in Gelsenkirchen this September. These meetings are always inspiring and full of new ideas, many of which we will be sharing with you very soon!

In addition to our productive work sessions, we had the opportunity to explore and learn from various innovative projects and meet the creative minds behind them. We visited two Greek Fablabs, LUDD Lab and Prelab Creative Space, and reopened chapter 3 on new modules for the cultural sector. It was fascinating to observe the different working methods of these structures, all while maintaining a high level of creativity.

To discover another ecological and responsible side of Athens,  we visited Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre,
an ultra-modern complex renowned for its many awards for environmental sustainability. This impressive center houses the National Library of Greece and the National Opera, both of which we were lucky enough to explore! We ended the day with beautiful panoramic views of the city and the sea from the lighthouse.

Water was part of a lot of our discussions this week and we were lucky to see the beautiful performance by UrbanDig Project who took us on adventure in the Hadrian Aqueduct – the only aqueduct of its type and size in Europe that still carries water, despite being built around 1900 years ago! Our Greek partners let us learn more about the monument, delve deeper into the issue of climate sustainability and tour the beautiful landscapes of Athens – all through the captivating performance of a live theatre piece.

Exciting things are on the horizon. Our upcoming meeting in Gelsenkirchen promises to be buzzing with new ideas we came up with.
Stay tuned!
